Over 130 years ago, Catholic University of America opened as the Catholic Church's national university right in our nation's capital, Washington D.C. Pope Leo XIII wanted a national research university that allowed students to live out their Catholic faith mission while receiving their undergraduate or graduate degrees.
Catholic University of America not only provides a Catholic education for students, it also has the largest Basilica in North America right on its campus. The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception has close to one million people visit every single year, which many of those visitors are Catholic University students and their families.
Michael Dane, who is in his sophomore year as a Politics and Media and Communications double major, said the religious aspect and location were extremely important as deciding factors when choosing to become a Catholic University Cardinal.
"There were a mixture of things," Dane said. "Number one, the faith life on campus was a huge indicator. I am Catholic myself and my faith is very important to me so being in this general area was very, very important for me. Also, the location is very convenient. Being in Washington D.C., we're actually the only university that has a metro stop on campus, so it is very easy to get around the entire city of Washington and those two things combined were really a strong indicator for why I decided to go here."
With just over 3,000 undergraduate students, it is considered to be a smaller campus, yet it offers various programs, whether you are a politics major, nursing student, an architecture student, and so much more. Catholic University has one of the best nursing programs in the country and is in the process of building a brand new nursing school. This university also has the best architecture program in the Washington D.C. area. Dylan Morse is a sophomore architect student at Catholic University and has loved his experience so far.
"It was one of my top choices and when I got to visit the architecture building, it was a lot better than my other choice," Morse said. "This one was more open, a lot of natural light, and I liked how much work I saw was getting done. The other one was way too clean and tidy, so I liked this one a lot better."
According to many of the students at this campus, this university is also very diverse in beliefs. Although it is a Catholic campus and many would assume most people think the same way, there are all types of political and faith ideologies. Along with this, there are over 100 club organizations that students can join based on their interests.
Overall, Catholic University of America has many unique aspects to its campus that has drawn many students to attend. With the location of the campus being in the capital of the United States, there are endless opportunities from exploring to internships to seeing all the history our country has gone through.
